If you have teenaged children, you may worry about them being exposed to illicit drug use. You may even suspect that they have started to use drugs. Your child may display certain physical signs or behavioural changes that could point to drug use, but bear in mind, some of these indicators could also be associated with illness or depression. It is important to consider all possibilities before taking action to ensure the safety and well being of your child.

In recent years, a number of products and services have come onto the market that are intended for use by parents to determine whether their children are using drugs. In some cases, these home drug testing devices use hair analysis to detect the presence of drugs. In other cases, the test kits require that the child provide a urine sample. Parents who are concerned about their child's safety should think carefully about whether the use of such tests is appropriate or warranted. They should keep in mind, for example, that home drug testing kits - like home pregnancy tests - are not 100% reliable. That is why the makers of home pregnancy tests advise women to confirm the results with their doctor. A positive result from a home drug testing kit should be viewed with the same degree of skepticism.

There are other questions parents should ask themselves before resorting to home drug testing. What effect will testing have on the relationship between you and your child? Will the test make it easier to talk to your child about drugs? Do you have a strategy that can be implemented if the test proves positive (and your child confirms that he or she is using drugs)? Could you perhaps find out about your child's drug use simply by asking them, rather than asking them to submit to a drug test? Research shows that people are often comfortable in talking about their drug use and will provide accurate information if asked in a respectful and non-threatening way.
